In the Heart of San Diego

An Overview of Carmel Valley

Located in the heart of northwestern San Diego County, Carmel Valley is a suburban community with a variety of residential styles, commercial offices, hotels, and retail stores. Bordered by Del Mar Mesa, Torrey Hills, Torrey Pines, and Pacific Highlands Ranch, Carmel Valley is known for its easy access to many of San Diego`s major destinations, including the business hub of Sorrento Valley, Torrey Pines State Beach and Park, the seaside community of Del Mar, and the main thoroughfares of highway 56 and interstate 5.

Founded in 1975 by the City of San Diego, Carmel Valley is one of the newer neighborhoods within the city limits. Originally referred to as North City West in the master plan, the name Carmel Valley was adopted in the early 1990s, with the name deriving from the Carmelite Sisters of Mercy, who had established a monastery and dairy farm on the land circa 1905.
